Nine Arabic words and my working life

.

Why I write this post is due to some non Muslim asked me that what is a meaning of '' Assalamu Alaikum''.

Here is my answer....

The Obligation of giving Salam
Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) says in the Quran:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَدْخُلُوا بُيُوتًا غَيْرَ بُيُوتِكُمْ حَتَّى تَسْتَأْنِسُوا وَتُسَلِّمُوا عَلَى أَهْلِهَا ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

O you who believe! Enter not houses other than your own, until you have asked permission and greeted those there in".

(Surah An-Noor: Verse 27)

فَإِذَا دَخَلْتُم بُيُوتًا فَسَلِّمُوا عَلَى أَنفُسِكُمْ تَحِيَّةً مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ مُبَارَكَةً طَيِّبَةً

...But when you enter the houses, greet one another with a greeting from Allah: a greeting blessed and good...

(Surah An-Noor: verse 61)

وَإِذَا حُيِّيْتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّواْ بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا

"When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it, or (at least) return it equally..."

(Surah An-Nisa: verse 86)

When entering or leaving the house, one must acknowledge those inside by using the greetings of Muslims and themotto of Islam;
'' Assalamu Alaikum, warahamatullahi wabarakatul''

"May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you"

Now please let me share my experiences from few years ago. At my work, all of my colleague were non Muslim. Some of them were anti Islam in depth. At that time, my duty was to communicate and follow up with Embassies and Consulates from all continents. When I contacted to Embassies from Islamic countries, I started my conversation with '' Assalamu Alaikum''. When my colleague heard, they turned their face toward to me. But I continued my conversation and I thought to my self that I did nothing wrong. I showed my self that I am a Muslimah, I follow Allah's (SWT) teaching and I do respect my surrounding. Why should I shy and afraid to say '' Assalamu Alaikum''.

My colleague asked me question gently that what is a meaning of '' Assalamu Alaikum''. Why did you use that words. I explained to them that the meaning is '' May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you ''. It is a polite words. Every nation also has it's own greeting words. So from that time some non Muslim greeting me '' Assalamu Alaikum'' than I smile and return '' Wa alaikumu Salam ''. After that day, when I started my conversation with Salam to Islamic Embassies, they did not turn their face like before. They also understood and respected each other eventhough they warned me to choose rights foods for me as I am a Muslim.

May Allah (SWT) bless you.
